Day 18: What about gay marriage?

“My friends, how desperately do we need to be loved and to love.”
— Chief Dan George, SKOKOMISH

One of the reasons I have heard for opposing gay marriage is the assumption that gays have a choice in who they feel attracted to. According to people I have talked to who would know…people who are gay… the reality is quite different. Many people believe that gays simply choose to be gay. But the reality is that very few do have a choice — any more than very few heterosexuals choose which sex to find themselves attracted to.

If it is true that a person is “born” gay, and they have deep feelings for a same-sex partner to the extent that they believe they must spend the rest of their life with that person, who am I to say they should not?

There are a majority of heterosexual marriages that are as wacky and destructive as they can be. Is that alright?

I am not trying to convince anyone that my feelings on this subject are the “right” feelings, they are just MY feelings. Love is love. I don’t think we choose who we fall head over heels for. It is an unexplained mystery. I do know we need more love in the world. No doubt about that.

On another note:

I am on vacation and this was the last thing I saw before I went to bed last night.

Lake Austin at night

…and this is what I saw first thing this morning.

  1. In a society so full of fear and hate, it’s difficult to understand the beauty of love. Very nicely put, and lovely photos!
